Cover Veneers or whitening? How to choose correctly

You want a brighter smile. You talk to a friend who tells you to get veneers. You read online that whitening does miracles. Someone says bonding is enough. What’s the difference and how do you choose correctly? Here’s our honest guide.

What each procedure changes — in 30 seconds

ProcedureChangesTypical costDurability
Whiteningonly colour800-1,500 RON1-3 years
Bondingsmall defects + local colour350-700 RON/tooth3-7 years
Veneerscolour + shape + position1,800-3,500 RON/tooth10-20+ years
All-ceramic crownsthe whole tooth1,500-2,500 RON/tooth10-15+ years

Now, in detail.

When whitening is enough

Whitening works only for colour. It’s enough if:

  • ✅ Your teeth have the shape and position you want
  • ✅ Problems are only extrinsic stains (coffee, wine, tobacco, tea)
  • ✅ You want improvement of 4-8 shades, not a radical change
  • ✅ No visible restorations (crowns, veneers, frontal fillings) that don’t whiten
  • ✅ Your enamel is healthy, without severe abrasion

Limitations:

  • Doesn’t change shape, length, or alignment
  • Temporary result (1-3 years, less for smokers)
  • Post-treatment sensitivity in ~40% of patients (temporary)
  • Doesn’t work on existing restorations — they’ll appear darker vs whitened teeth

Verdict: whitening is the first step, most accessible financially. If this is what bothers you, we start there.

When we recommend bonding (resin)

Bonding is an aesthetic restoration with composite resin applied directly to the tooth, shaped and polymerised with UV lamp. Used for:

  • Small chips at the tooth edge
  • Spaces (diastemas) between teeth (up to 2-3 mm)
  • Punctual intrinsic stains (from old treated cavities)
  • Slightly irregular shapes of a single tooth
  • ✅ You want a “preview” test for how you’d look with veneers

Advantages:

  • Fast procedure — 1-2 visits, usually no anaesthesia
  • Low cost — 350-700 RON per tooth
  • Conservative — no tooth grinding (or minimal)
  • Reversible — can be removed if you don’t like it

Limitations:

  • Stains faster than ceramic (coffee, wine)
  • 3-7 year durability (vs 15+ years for ceramic veneers)
  • For large aesthetic changes, doesn’t reproduce ceramic’s naturalness
  • Depends heavily on doctor’s skill — result depends a lot on experience

Verdict: bonding is ideal for small repairs and tests. If you want a complete smile makeover, veneers are a better long-term investment.

When we recommend ceramic veneers

Veneers are thin ceramic laminates (0.3-0.7 mm) bonded to the visible side of teeth. Completely change appearance. Recommended when:

  • ✅ You want to change shape, length, or position of teeth
  • ✅ You have severe intrinsic stains (tetracycline, fluorosis) that don’t respond to whitening
  • ✅ You want permanent result and maximum aesthetic quality
  • ✅ You have slightly crooked teeth but don’t want orthodontics (aesthetic compromise)
  • ✅ Budget for an investment of 15,000-30,000 RON for 4-8 frontal teeth

Types of veneers:

Traditional ceramic veneers (E.max, Empress)

  • 0.5-0.7 mm thickness
  • Requires moderate grinding of tooth (0.3-0.7 mm)
  • Durability 15-20+ years
  • Very natural aesthetics
  • Cost: 2,500-3,500 RON/tooth

Minimally invasive veneers (Lumineers, contact lens veneers)

  • 0.3 mm thickness — like a contact lens
  • Minimal or zero grinding
  • Reversible
  • 10-15 year durability
  • Cost: 2,800-4,000 RON/tooth

Composite veneers (extended bonding)

  • Applied directly, no laboratory
  • Lower cost
  • 5-7 year durability
  • Requires high doctor skill

Ceramic veneers process:

  1. Consultation + digital smile design
  2. Mock-up (test on teeth with temporary composite — see result before)
  3. Minimal tooth grinding (under anaesthesia)
  4. Digital impression (intraoral scanner)
  5. Provisional veneers for 2-3 weeks
  6. Bonding of final veneers (1-2 sessions)

Limitations:

  • Irreversible procedure — ground teeth remain ground
  • Higher cost
  • Possible temporary sensitivity
  • Veneers can crack on major trauma (biting ice, contact sports)
  • Must wear night guard if you grind

Frequent combinations

In practice, many plans combine procedures:

“Light” plan — mild improvement (3,000-5,000 RON)

  1. Scaling + professional hygiene
  2. Professional in-office whitening
  3. Bonding for 1-2 chips (if any)

“Medium” plan — visible transformation (8,000-15,000 RON)

  1. Mild orthodontic alignment (Invisalign Lite — 6 months)
  2. Post-alignment whitening
  3. Bonding or 2-4 frontal veneers

”Premium” plan — complete smile makeover (20,000-35,000 RON)

  1. Complete orthodontics (if necessary)
  2. Whitening
  3. 8 frontal ceramic veneers (canine to canine on both arches)
  4. Possibly implants for missing teeth

Frequently asked questions

Can I get veneers without grinding my teeth? With minimally invasive veneers (Lumineers type), grinding is minimal (0.1-0.3 mm) or zero. For traditional veneers 0.5-0.7 mm is necessary. We discuss at consultation what’s suitable for your case.

How long do veneers last? Ceramic — 15-20+ years with proper care. Composite — 5-7 years. Bonding — 3-7 years. Renewing veneers after 15-20 years is a normal procedure.

Can people tell they’re veneers? With modern quality ceramic veneers, no. Ceramic reproduces the natural opacity and shine of teeth. The difference is made by the doctor and laboratory — a bad veneer is visible from 5 meters away.

Can I get veneers if I grind my teeth (bruxism)? Yes, but you must wear a night guard. Otherwise veneers can crack in 1-2 years.

Does whitening damage enamel? No, when done professionally, with quality gel and controlled concentration. Cheap OTC whitening done uncontrolled can cause problems.

Can I revert to how my teeth were if I don’t like veneers? For traditional veneers, no — grinding is permanent. That’s why we do mock-up and digital smile design before — you see the result and decide. For minimally invasive veneers and bonding, reversibility is partial or total.

How we decide together at consultation

At the aesthetic consultation:

  1. We discuss your expectations — what bothers you, what you want to change
  2. We examine teeth — stains, chips, lengths, occlusion
  3. VITA shade guide — determine current shade and goal
  4. Photos + digital smile design for complex cases
  5. Personalised plan with 2-3 variants (cost / invasiveness / durability)
  6. Honest estimate of cost and duration

We don’t start any invasive treatment (veneers, grinding) without you seeing the result simulation and being 100% sure.
